What Did You Do Today???

This morning... for some minor fun... I began a troll on a spammer on another forum that I admin/moderate :D

Most of the spammers I see on this now mostly defunct forum... are what I call "link back" spammers. They simply post a URL back to the site they are spamming for either in their user account info or in a post on the forum. The majority are linking to viagra related sites and such but others link to other commercial sites as well. ( No doubt Tony is familiar with this type of spammer, this info is for others here that aren't ). My typical action for these types is to delete the account and any posts they've made, check the IP address the user was using and see if it's from a known IP range that spammers use and if so add an IP block for the range of IP's known to be from spammers.

This latest one had me chuckling ( at what they were attempting to do to hide their link back ). First, they'd directly copied a post directly from a 10 year old help thread for someone having problems getting Blender ( a free 3D Graphics editor software ) to work with their now 10 year old computer running Vista 64b. Basically, the original post stated they couldn't run Blender without getting an error and they suspected that their video card was the culprit and was wanting a suggestion as to what to replace it with.

Had they not linked to the original post from 10 years back... it would have been less obvious ( I still would have checked out the URL link anyway ). The absurd part is thinking that someone with a problem from 10 years ago would still be trying to find a solution and wouldn't have already replaced that video card with something else or found the actual fix their system may have needed.

So first... I did my admin/moderator job... I edited out the link back URL they'd added stating that it was an unrelated url in the edit description... That being done... I went along with the post with a quick reply to troll the spammer a bit...

I mentioned that they will likely have a hard time finding a new video card that would support Vista 64b ( a 12 year old OS ) on 10 year old equipment both of which would limit their available choices to the used market. Next.... I asked them to list the steps they have already taken to try to resolve the issue under the pretense that we didn't want to suggest something they've already tried.

I doubt I'll get a response.... but it was some quick fun to see if they would respond none the less.

Decided it was time for a shave and a hair cut today. Pulled out the clippers trimmed the face so it was easier to shave. Then I moved to my hair. Got about halfway and oiled the blades. Went to finish the other half and I about ripped out a small patch of hair.

So now I have to figure out why my 12year old clippers and now not cutting. I tear them down and investigate and I found a broken spring. Go to Andis's web site to order a spring and bam, no longer offered. At one point I could order every piece on the clippers. The clippers I got are salon grade so I could rebuild the whole unit. Due to them being 12 years old I can't get the parts any more.

Now in have the back of my bread that needs faded and the top still needs blended in. You can't see that part because my hair is wet.

Received my Raspberry Pi 3 B+ today and already have Plex up and running on it. I had to do the storage a little different than I wanted since I could not get it to see a networked drive, so I had to put the drive straight into the Pi and mount it that way. I'm still searching for a solution to mount a network drive to the Pi so if you know how, let me know. But I'm loving this. So far 59.1C is the hottest it has gotten. Doesn't start throttling until about 80C. So I have a nice little window to work with.

Aaaaaannnnndddddd, one wrong line of code and I'm starting back from square one... I have a feeling I'm going to be doing this a few times lol. But I think I found how to mount a network drive to the Pi. I put in some bad info that caused it to default to locking everyone out rather than putting the info out there. It actually locked the root user out.... Raspbien doesn't screw around with security lmao. Now I just need to find a way to change the command from apt-get to yum and we will be in business. After working on my server for so long, it's second nature to type yum..... I hate Linux....

Here is an htop screen shot from the Pi running Plex Media Server and playing a movie on my TV. htop is somewhat like the Task Manager on your Windows computer.

And here are the temps for about the last 20 minutes. This one is just running a simple command as you can see in the image.

Untitled2.png

I finally was able to mount the networked drive to the Pi and I was able to keep all of my other computers network drives the same just like I wanted. I knew it could be done, but just didn't know how. The code that worked is below in case any of you want to do the same.

You have to put this into your /etc/fstab folder via nano. This is my code, yours will be different since you need the actual map to the drive. I had it with the IP address in the beginning, but removing that made it work much better.

//RT-AC3100-01D0/Plex /home/pi/Media cifs username=my-username,password=my-password,vers=1.0 0 0

So in case any of you are wanting to do this, that was the hardest part. I now have a $40 Plex server that is utilizing an existing NAS on my network. Now how awesome is that!!!

Plex was pretty cool... but I liked the configurability that XBMC ( now called KODI ) has with it's variety of skins and numerous addons and plugins.

I like XBMC also, but the support for it is very spotty right now. It's tough to keep your add ons current. All the great kodi add ons are now dead.

I have not used it in about a year so I don't know if this has been improved.

Kodi has two camps of add-ons... the official ones and the 3rd party unofficial ones. The official ones are typically kept updated but like any free open source stuff, the authors don't always keep things up, I suspect this is going to be true anywhere including Plex. Many of the unofficial ones that I'd looked at are targeted at streaming copyrighted content and do often get shut down being targeted by lawsuits and sease and desist orders. The Kodi team is working on adding some DRM that can later be used for streaming services like Amazon Prime, Hulu, Netflix and others... this will help a lot with copyrighted materials. While having DRM available won't stop unofficial addons from streaming unauthorized content, it will help some with the "blackhat" reputation Kodi's gathered since they'll be able to stream from official channels then.

Most of my content is from music CD's and movie DVD's ( which I've haven't added to very often these days it seems ) that I've copied to disk making it easier for me to listen to or watch which was also what I was using Plex for as well. I also find the Youtube addon pretty handy in helping keep me up to date with my subscriptions ( mostly weather related such as chasers etc ).

Tried Kodi and didn't like it. It's twice as heavy as plex. Kind of like going from XP to Vista.... Or 7 to 8... They do the same things, one just sucks more than the other lol. I just play videos and watch them. It does that. It's all I need.

I never had any issues with Plex ( several years ago, so they may have made some changes I'm unaware of )... I just enjoyed the configurability that XBMC ( at that time, now Kodi ) gave me. Kodi also has some add-ons that I thought I'd want at some point but still haven't implemented ( PVR for one ) and I really liked being able to change up the look with the various skins they've got.

I also started with an Android Mini-PC which allowed me to use Radarscope on my TV along with XBMC. Later I moved to a Windows 10 Mini-PC which allowed me to use my preferred radar program ( Grlevel3 ) along with Kodi.... now Radarscope is also available on Windows 10 as well which lets me switch back and forth between GrL3 and/or Radarscope if I wish.

Worked on my pos car. Changing wheel bearings. Thought it was going to be somewhat easy. Well that's what YouTube said anyways.
