Projects New RC Project that has me stressing

Ok....I was just looking at A Main Hobbies and they have an APC 19x8 IMAC Aerobatic Wide Blade Propeller for $22. No problem there. I'd like to order two props for testing...maybe a 20" prop. Would you suggest a 20x8 or 20x10?

I would do the 20x8 if you are doing two. That is, with the 19x8. Just depends on if you are trying to hit that magic number or if you are trying to see if you can pull smoke out of the watt meter lmao.

lol...well, I am surely not trying to pull that magic smoke from the watt meter, lol. I'm just curious (as always) if I should buy two different sizes and see which would perform better WITHOUT pulling that magic smoke from anything (watt meter nor esc).

Nah, like I stated, get the 19x8 and the 20x8 and you should be fine. If you are still a little high on the wattage, then you can always order another prop, like a 19x6 or something. Sucks that they are so expensive.

I hear ya! I'll see what I can find.

OH wow!!! I can't believe what I'm finding, Tony! There are "Sport" props, "Thin" props, "IMAC Aerobatic Wide Blade" props.

Why can't they just have a page that says, "Hey Derek...these are the props that you are looking for!" Would that really be too much to ask.

Ok, I'm done crying. Again, I'm going to ask, lol...what are your thoughts here, Tony? Probably not the "thin" props. Do you know of any differences between "sport" props and whatever "IMAC Aerobatic Wide Blade Propeller" means?

Actually being that this is going on an electric motor, I would choose the thin props. that is what I'm running any way adn it's what I would have chosen. But I don't know what the other two are lmao.

Ok, I'm looking at A Main Hobbies right now. They don't have a "thin" 19x8 prop, so I'm gonna order a 20x10 and an 18x8. Let the "trial and error" begin....again!

I hear ya, buddy! I'm not so much "stressing" like I was a many months ago, when I started this project. Now, I'm just trying to get the final pieces around. I ordered the two lipo's that will power this bird (along with some other parts for some other planes). I ordered two props (one is an 18x8 and the other is a 20x10) this morning. I should have the props real soon. I ordered them from A Main Hobbies and their shipping has always been respectable. Once the props get here, I'll do some bench testing to see which one is more efficient. Tony and I are a bit concerned about the amps, but we'll see. I'll do some video and share what I get. Nonetheless, we are getting closer and I'm getting more and more excited.

OH, I think I'll be a part of rc history...at least for a little while, as the guy that spent WAY TOO MUCH money on a foam board plane, lol. Although...I've learned quite a bit since starting this project and I'm just really glad that I've had Tony and RCH to back me up along the way. I don't go to "those other" forums anymore because they really don't talk to me much and I think it mostly has to do with the fact that I'm not one of those guys that has a fleet of store bought $500 kit planes. So...we'll just have to wait and see what other ideas pop in to my head, lol.

Here is something for everyone to think about...

What should Derek do with the motor when this thing flies? It's HUGE motor! I, for some reason, see him building a 1/3 scale Piper Cub or something lmao.

Once it flies he might want to fly it again. But as for a project Any High wing application would be sweet. Then again so would a low wing design.

Well, we'll tackle that hurdle when the time comes.

In the meantime, as stated above, I placed the order for two propellers. One is a 20x10 and the other is an 18x8. I just got an email notice from A Main Hobbiessaying that my order has been shipped. I imagine that I should have my parts by Monday, at the latest. My previous orders from them have always come pretty quick. I'll be doing some bench testing next week.

Ok....so I checked the mail today, looking for the usual junk mail and inconvenient bills lol, and I was pleasantly surprised. No junk mail! YAY! No bills! MEGA YAY! However, there was a box. The box was from A Main Hobbies. Well...I know whats in that box. The two props that I ordered on Saturday. That's some insane fast shipping. So, I have my 18x8 prop and my 20x10 prop to start doing some bench testing.

I'm serious...with shipping speed like that, I will be looking more towards A Main Hobbies than Hobby King from now on.

Hobbyking isn't bad provided you are able to order from the us warehouse.. I got my nano tech packs quick i actually ordered from international but they ended up coming from Washington

I think I have a problem.

I had gotten a BUNCH of scrap wire from my work, many months ago. This is the wire that I'm using to make my servo extensions. However, I just realized that the gauge of wire is actually a bit smaller than a typical servo wire. I've looked at a few websites and they sell servo wire in 26 gauge and 22 gauge, possibly other gauges, but these are what I found at the time of my search. I'm no "wire specialist" so I can't be 110% sure what gauge this wire is that I've used but if I had to guess, I would say it's 26 gauge wire.

Is this going to be ok?

Hopefully, yes!

If not, I will have to open up each of my 5 wing sections and replace all the wire. If I have to do this, I surely will, but I'm interested in hearing what RCH has to say about this.
