Those FBL units are good for over 8.4V.. so if the BEC was supplying too much voltage then I'd expect the 6V rated servos to fail first, which I think makes that explanation less likely. What receiver are you using?

Yes, it will discharge them but it might take a long time depending on the battery size. The discharge rate of most chargers is about one tenth of the charge rate.

Sounds very much like it was a bad connection on one of the bullets, that or they were shorting out against each other or against the carbon frame. Either way re-making the connections seems to have fixed it.

Yeah, this is quite a big departure from the traditional Align designs that we have come to expect. The mechanics must be pretty much new from the ground up. I wonder if the direct drive belt tail and the other new features will be showing up in other helis in the Align range?
