500 ALZRC Devil 420 FAST - build log

That's a great deal.. Bear in mind though that you need a different power system to any '450' size heli, so if you have those parts left over from a 450 they arent going to work. The 380 uses 6S for starters but also it's bigger and heavier than any 450 and needs a bigger ESC and a larger motor...

FBL Gyro Spirit Pro with Three Bladed Goblin

Good that you got it sorted, it pretty much had to be reversed gyro compensation (which is what having the orientation 180 degrees out gives you)

    Servo terminal crimpers

It's funny because servo crimpers are a tool that in all the time I've been in the hobby I've never found the need for. As a rule if a servo wire is too long I'll simply fold it back on itself and zip tie it away neatly somewhere so you cant notice. I do take some pride in making a nice neat...

FBL Gyro Spirit Pro with Three Bladed Goblin

Well it will be interesting to hear what Hugo finds but really i cant think of anything that on a new heli would be likley cause a tip-over so violently immediately after liftoff, other than reversed gyro compensation. A busted servo or extreme vibration levels are the other things that could...

FBL Gyro Spirit Pro with Three Bladed Goblin

Sounds very much like reversed head gyro compensation, short of a servo suddenly failing there inst really anything else that would cause it. Gyro comp is easy to test and should be tested prior to every maiden. Just hold the heli level and quickly lean it right or left.. the swash must...

    Micro Low profile skids

Like Tony said, not a ridiculous question at all. In fact lots of folk seem to worry about exactly the same issue on helis that have a nose down tilt. The other thing that often causes confusion with tilted skids is the need to make the heli 'level' during FBL initiation (you dont need to).

    Micro Low profile skids

You dont level the swash to the ground, the swash must be 'levelled' to be perpendicular to the main shaft... No other datum matters except the main shaft. This is why swash levelling tools fit on the main shaft. Having the swash level to the ground but tilted back relative to the main shaft...

good luck with maiden flight #2 Remember: :voidh:

FBL Gyro Spirit Pro with Three Bladed Goblin

Looks like they changed the shape of the skids but didn't get around to updating the manual. The manual is right insomuch that the short leg should go to the front, but the shape is all wrong. It wasn't a problem for me because mine uses the 'flipper' type landing gear like used on the standard...

Whats been going on with me.

Uri, Thanks for being brave enough to share this, and I hope the sharing does help. I've been lucky enough to not have experienced this myself but I have some idea as I've had close family members suffer from something similar. I appreciate though that it is one of those things you have to go...

FBL Gyro Spirit Pro with Three Bladed Goblin

I have a 2200mAh battery in mine but the 420 does have a bit more disk area to carry a bigger battery. The canopy is a tight fit, mine is cracking where it pushes up against the front of the battery and wires. I cant move the battery back as I'm fighting tail heaviness at the best of times. I...

FBL Gyro Spirit Pro with Three Bladed Goblin

Phil, It really surprises me that it's nose heavy. I have the Devil 420 which is a clone of the Goblin 420, which in turn is just a slightly stretched 380.. That heli is quite tail heavy, i had to add lead in the front of the canopy to balance. What battery are you using?.. Or maybe it's the...

FBL Gyro Spirit Pro with Three Bladed Goblin

She looks very nice Phil ! I've never experienced a situation where high head gain caused such dramatic problems but there's a first time for everything, and I've no experience of 3 blade heads. Good luck with the next test flight.

PS.. got any photos of the new heli?

FBL Gyro Spirit Pro with Three Bladed Goblin

If the wobble occurred during initial spool-up then the usual cause is that the main blade grips aren't tight enough and/or are uneven so that a blade is swinging back in the grip and un-balancing the head. You should be able to hold the heli on it's side without the blades pivoting down in...

FBL Gyro Spirit Pro with Three Bladed Goblin

Great that you are adding more nice helis to the fleet! I'd be pretty confident that the standard 2 blade defaults would work well enough to get you safely in the air. What exactly did it do? Too high on the head gain would normally just result in some 'cyclic wobble', certainly nothing that...

    Motors amps

Software such as Motocalc or Propcalc will do a decent job of estimating current draw. This doesn't negate the need for the wattmeter but it's a lot better than guesswork to get in the right ballpark

    ESC esc heating up

PS.. the linear regulator IC (the black chip with three pins on one side and one on the other near where the wires that go to the Rx are soldered) looks like it may be burned, it would need a close up pic to be sure. If that's the case then the most likely cause would be a short between the red...

    ESC esc heating up

+1 on Tony's advice. If there was smoke the ESC is toast. There are several possible causes, it could just be a random fault though reverse polarity or connecting batteries of too high voltage are also possibilities. PS...... just noticed the photos, there are no connectors soldered on and no...
