Tony.... and anyone else looking at getting a new GPU...

If you are looking to upgrade your video card, for gaming or 3D rendering .... now is the time to start looking and getting something. It's also probably not the time to dilly-dally for very long on deciding what to get because of several factors that will only last for a few months ( more than likely, this is sort of like forecasting the future so it isn't any more than an opinion ). There are two main reasons you don't want to wait too long...

For raw gaming performance, the top dogs have been nVidia's GTX 1080 and 1080 TI GPU's. When nVidia released their RTX 2000 series ( aka the 2070, 2080 and 2080 TI )... they quit making the GTX 1000 series GPU's and have at the same time forced their partners to take all of their existing stock in those older series chips in order to make room for the newer series. This is forcing the partners to absorb and stock a lot of the old series chips... and also get as many of the new series as well.

On the other hand, for raw graphics computing power like used in 3D rendering for CAD, video and similar things... The big dog has been the Radeon RX 590 series but AMD recently released their new Vega 56 and 64. Add to this the recent all out bust seen in the crypto currency mining area ( primarily impacting the RX 5xx series GPU's but also affecting the GTX 1000 series somewhat )... There is now starting to have another overstock issue on these types of cards because of all of the partners that are dealing in this area had been ramping up their production to meet the demands that the mining boom had created.

So things on both sides, gaming and compute unit type of graphics are switching from a sellers market over to a buyers market. How long that will last is anyone's guess but I'm thinking that it'll only last a few months at best ( if that long ). Currently, the GTX 1080 TI would cost you much more than all of the other components in a new computer combined... now it just about equals them. T'he GTX 1080's are in about the mid-$400 to just over $500 range not to mention the prices I'm seeing on the 1060's and 1070's which are still really nice gaming GPU's.

Oh... that isn't everything... AMD has surpassed Intel in the CPU market ( primarily the multi-core stuff ) also making for some very interesting things in that arena. Primarily, it's with workstation class CPU's that I'm talking about... ie Threadripper vs the Xeon's. Intel did recently release some of their 9th gen stuff to take back the upper end standard desktop area from the Ryzen series but I suspect that won't last long since Intel is having trouble going to their 10nm process for their CPU's and AMD is now breaching the 7nm on theirs.

Interesting times indeed.

Well... the guy who crashed his auto gyro at the airport 3 times in one year, did so for the last time today. He and another man dropped off a gyro with our service/repair department today, for an annual and then departed the airport in another gyro. They never made it to where they were going, because they crashed in a trailer park about 10-15 minutes after takeoff. Both of them died in the crash, and one person on the ground was injured. :( :(

They (the news) say he "clipped" a power line and a power pole. I have to call B.S. on that. For one, the power lines and pole tops in that trailer park are well below the height of any of the hundreds of trees in the park. So he would have had to hit a tree before he could have been able to hit the lines. But why would he be flying that low over houses anyway? He did have a habit of flying dangerously, and I would bet that`s what did it. His last crash, that my coworkers and I witnessed, happened when he was doing low fast turns....over the taxiway....big no no... and ended up stalling the main rotor about 25ft from the ground.

One witness did say that she saw him flying parallel with HWY27, just high enough to clear the high voltage transmission wires that run parallel with the HWY just before he went down.

I got my new video card in ( Radeon RX 560 4G ) and while I was at it... I also changed out from my cheapy Mini-Tower case over to an almost brand new MidTower that has much better air flow in it, more ( and better ) drive mounting, better cable management and just a better all around case.

My gaming performance really has increased... I've never seen my solitaire games so smooth.... LMAO

Seriously though, the photo processing programs I've using are much smoother and quicker at processing when developing or applying filters. I only played with a few pics before I finally went through and let one of my programs catalog ( almost 10,000 shots ) the pics I've taken with my Nikon. Unfortunately, cataloging is more about disk read/write access than GPU performance and that took around 6 ish hours to complete.

Mike Olbinski does it yet again ( as if there were any doubt )...

This is his release of the 5th in the series... Monsoon V

... play it on a big screen if you have that option... and turn up the sound...

Geena, that is horrible news. Just another reason why I do not fly anything. I have never flown in a plane and never even thought about getting a pilots license. Because I would fly just like him... Still tragic.

And Randy, just to play Devils Advocate, Nvidia has much better workstation GPU's than AMD such as the Quatro. Yes, they are more money, but performance matters to those that money doesn't matter.

As for the 1080 pricing, you are right, and I'm trying like hell to get the money to purchase a 1080ti for my personal rig. don't think it will happen though sadly. Would be nice though.

FYI.... Just saw on Gamers Nexus YT ... the 1080 TI is almost out of stock...

You going to hurry up and buy me one?

I had a GTX 1080 ( non TI version) in the cart last night... came back in this morning and they'd not only removed it, but the SKU I'd selected isn't even listed now....

So I'm guessing that no one wants you to have one.... :D

( PS... I did seriously have one selected like I mentioned, but it was for a higher end gaming system I was working a quote up for )

I checked this morning and the ti's were still available. But stock is quickly running out.

I wouldn't have thought they'd have run out overnight... but the main vendors are saying they are starting to run low as mentioned. Of course they are talking about warehouse numbers... they weren't talking about just having handfuls left. After also seeing a 1080 SKU get dropped at a major reseller, I also suspect that other 1000 series are also seeing something similar things happening as far as sales numbers go.

Do not open any email from me! My computer was hacked last night. More info in the announcement section.

I never open your emails anyway..hahahaha. Seriously though, I hope you get it sorted. Sucks that people have to do stuff like that. :(
