I always check them just to make sure what I'm soldering on doesn't get a 120v shock. Most of the handles have the wiring for ground (earth for those across the pond lol) and all you need to do is run a wire from that ground on the handle to a ground on the PCB or better yet, the actual ground on the wires coming in from the mains. This is of course assuming it has a 3 prong plug on it...

After my parts for my work computer came in yesterday afternoon, I started a prep on the original Windows install ( the one before the original MB failed ) to be moved to the new hardware. It's a basic set of steps that just uninstalls any propitiatory installed drivers ( ie audio, chipsets and/or video drivers as an example ). After I rebooted, the drive I had connected that I used for all of my main backups ( including my recent ones after this last failure ) decided it needed scanned and that something was wrong with it. The scan is stuck at 70% and isn't continuing.

Luckily I didn't reformat the original boot drive ahead of time, so I didn't loose any info from that but all of my other backups... including various ISO images of previous versions of Windows for various computers ( ie propitiatory copies for Dell, HP and the like ) as well as different versions of OEM Windows were/are stored on this drive. I'll try getting copies of what I can but it's not looking like I'll be able to recover everything... hopefully what I can't recover will be the less important files that I kept despite not needing them often.

Knock wood.... I may have lucked out.

At the very least, I did get most of the important stuff off of my backup drive. There were a couple spots ( folders or files ) that would BSOD the system when I tried to copy them to another drive but nothing I can't live without. Currently, I'm in the process of copying the files back to the drive after I deleted the original partition, reformatted and did a quick basic disk test on it.

For now, if it passes the tests I run on it... I'll continue to use the drive ( and keep another backup drive also just in case ) and then replace it when I get the chance... budget allowing of course.

Just an FYI, BestBuy has the WD 8TB drive on sale right now for $139. Smokin deal on that drive. It is a WD Red drive inside, but with a white label. If you want to shuck it, just make sure your connector doesn't have a 3.3v line in it, or cover up the third from the right pin I believe. If you have 3.3v going to the drive, it will put the drive to sleep. Only down side to the white label drives. But for that price, who cares lol.

Thanks... but I spent more than my budget allows already just getting the system back up and running. I also ended up with only 8Gb of memory instead of getting the 16Gb I'd liked to have gotten for just a little bit more than what I spent.

I'll keep an eye on the sales as I always do and grab one when I can.

Banning more spammers today... The first one was trying to get people to purchase from their site (batteries mainly) and the one today was trying to get members to click on a link to head over to their blog site. Not going to fly, I don't know what is on that site. It could be any number of virus' on there.

Moral of the story, if you see something that is shady, click on that Report button below the post and let us know. Sadly, these are real people doing this and not bots which makes it incredibly difficult for the software to catch them.

That's one thing I hated about the forum I ran on our rocketry club's site. You don't have time to be approving registrations but in doing that you are allowing just anyone into the site which is fine but then you have to put almost as much time into weeding them out once they are registered and posting enhancement drug links. Kudos to you for putting up with that crap!

Back in 2011 when I started this site, it was like that. Man, we were hammered with spam back them. That is when I learned about different products that we could use that checks their IP address, email, and username against a database of known spam info. This was a huge step forward. Now, the only real kind of spam we get is from real people. It would be like me going over to your site and saying "read this thread on Rc-Help.com about spammers" or "check out my store for FREE PDF PLANS". It's just annoying and there is absolutely no way to stop them with traditional methods other than having members report them or just seeing them myself and dealing with them.

That's the world I live in, always have, would love to change but can't. I occasionally reach saturation point and clean up but back in a mess within a week, when I was at work I had a sign on the wall that read "You say cluttered desk cluttered mind, I say empty desk empty mind"
