Quad QX2 stops props on radio signal loss instead of return to home

i was under the impression that if the QX2 lost signal to the receiver, it would go in to return to home mode automatically. looks like it is just killing the props. I tested this by holding down my quad on my coffee table and when the props are armed, turning off the receiver. I was expecting the qx2 led to start flashing red. I even tried rebinding with the return to home switch activated to give it proper fail safe configuration. Am I not doing something right?

Could it be that it's sitting in it's "home" spot?

Return to home probably needs a GPS fix, unlikely to do so inside on a coffee table.
Do the same test outside but take it away from where it got its initial GPS lock.
