Hi to you all here on RC-Help.com

Andy is my name and I'd like to say A Big English Hello to you all and look forward to our interactions. FYI - I've just returned to the RC Heli Hobby after a long break of...wait for it....23 Years! That was such a long time ago I know but such are Trails and Tribulations of life!

First of all - To Tony - Your RC-Help is GREAT Site along with your Excellent How-To-Do Videos and everything else here - Keep up the Excellent work...Well done!

I'm simply AMAZED at how RC Heli's and Radio's have changed over the years. Years back, I had 2 x Hirobo 505's - OS.60 Glow, A Kalt Baron .60, A kalt 22cc Petrol Engine, 2 x Hirobo Shuttles - when they first came on to the market in 1985, A small fixed pitch Cricket OS.30 Glow - My first Heli and Hirobo I think but to be honest REAL JUNK, Wot 4 Aerobatic Fixed Wing with OS.60 Glow and a Large Glider (???) plus a couple of Os.32 Glow Cars - GP And Off-Road.
I think you could all say I was a True RC addict back then.

Radio Gear was Futaba 8 channel FM.35Mhz PCM (Pulse Code Modulation). I bought this Aerobatic Heli Radio for the 2nd Hirobo 505 Kit and Hated it - Expensive (Cost GBP 500 in 1983) and was continually problematic and I regretted ever buying it, even after 4 warranty repairs in the first year it still never worked and would 'Freeze and Lock Up' in Mid-Flight with the inevitable uncontrollable crash - not at all helpful when Inverted!

My main TRUSTED Heli Radio, was a JR 8 Channel FM.35Mhz - Can't remember what model - Simple, effective, No Computer programming back in those days to help Tune things in like nowadays just like no Computer Flight Sims were even imagined either.

Last week I purchased the Spektrum DX6i DSMX and the Phoenix Flight Sim V.3. This was after reading many reviews of Today's Much Improved Radio Gear and numerous Flight Sim programs available - Some Excellent, many are trash. I was looking for the best buy, quality and, of course, Value for money - and who can blame me for that, eh?

What a great combination and, even better, it was so good to know that even after such a long break I doing well on the Phoenix Sim with the err... the 'Occasional Mishap'. :highly_amused:

Joking aside - The Phoenix Sim, or any QUALITY Sim' is such a good investment and an incredible True-To-Life training tool to both Learn and Hone your Flying Skills without the Expensive repair bills associated in the 'Occasional Mishap' which happens to us all. (R U Thinking - 'Yep I do That too...the Occasional Mishap')

If you haven't got a Quality Flight Sim like Phoenix or RealFlight, Take it from an 'Oldie' and Treat YOURSELF - GET ONE TODAY - They're worth every Pound, Penny, Cent, Dollar and you'll learn to fly in no time and you won't regret it!:encouragement:

I have a CopterX 450 Se V2 RTF which will arrive here shortly and I will be setting up the DX6i DSMX for this model upon arrival. However I'll continue honing the skills on the Phoenix before the CopterX 450 with be in the air.

:welcome1:

Thanks for the kind word my Romanian friend, glad to have you over here. Although I have been away from making videos, I am trying to get back into the swing of things. So you should see more videos in the near future.

That kit you purchased I have heard good things about. I think you will really enjoy flying it. If there is anything we can do to help you along, don't hesitate to ask.

As for what you said on the Sim's, you are correct, they are a great asset to the hobby. Even if all you can get your hands on is FMS, it's better than nothing. But after using Clearview, and now RealFlight 6, I couldn't imagine going back to such a basic sim. Spend the money, get something that's going to act like a real heli or plane, and learn the correct way.

Thanks again for joining up.

Romainia?
You are closer to me here in Vienna than Tony and all the others over on the other side of the pond.
Where are you ordering your Helis from? Things here in Austria are mad expensive compared to the States. I was there last month and picked upi two 450s" and a bunch of parts for what one 450 would set me back here.
Anyway, welcome to what has to be the best Heli help site out there.

Hi Irishrover,

Many thanks for your welcome and I have fond memories of Vienna after a working holiday back in 1991.

To answer your 'Where are you ordering your Helis from?' - From the UK and from Ehirobo.com (Excellent prices there) BUT Certainly Not here in Romania due to the INSANE 50% ' Luxury Tax' imposed on this pastime and a distinct LACK of Spare Parts = Almost ZERO for Helis to be honest.
Nitro Cars have a small market here with Any Heli - Electric or Nitro - being EXTREMELY Rare!

I really wanted to get back into Nitro Heli Scene again. Tornado Heli 30 4L 30% Nitromethan Fuel, although Hard to find, is available from just 2-3 shops here (If In Stock!) in Bucharest BUT costs 185:00lei PLUS 50lei delivery charge is to be quite Frank - INSANE. This equates to equivalent to GBP 44:59 / US$ 70.64. for FOUR Litres!

I ( quite wisely) reside in a uncommercialised town in the Transylvanian Mountain Region of West Romania and nowhere near any Major City - Thankfully (?)

Again thanks for your Welcome and Good Flying

Super Mod & DEAL KING!
Good to see you here! And man did you have a fleet... So what happened to all of it? Sold it!? Trashed it ? If you got ny of those, you should try putting it back up in the air. :)

Those days glow was THE only power plant for helis as I have heard. MAN! I love nitro still! I know electrics are fun and powerful and clean .. But meh!! Lol I like the liveliness of a glow engine I am sure you might appreciate that. :)

Hope to see you fly on video soon. :)

Hi coolgabsi,

Thanks for your welcome message.

Yep! It was a great fleet and I had to sell the lot unfortunately. :crushed: :heart-borken: The lucky buyers certainly got a great bargain! :victorious:

I was in the Military back then and I was being posted to a very 'Sensitve Operational Location' where any type of Radio Gear was Restricted 100%. :nightmare:

Looking back on it now I should have stored the complete Fleet And Workshop Tools with my Sister in the South West of UK but I never thought about that at the Time. :stupid:
Time was short if you understand what I mean - Such is life!

Yep - as far as far as I can remember back then, everything was Glow which gave all flyers the satisfaction of High powered model Flight, not forgetting the 'BUZZ'
and exhilaration when you start the Engines. No such thing as Lipo's back in those days. The same goes for these modern Powerful electric motors - How technology has changed in the last 20 + years still amazes me.

The sound of OS .61 Engine through Tuned Exhaust was so enthralling to me and any spectator...I'm sure you know what I mean.

I was looking at an OLD GMP Cricket on Ebay just the other day and it does look OLD and antiquated compared to the modern Day mechanics incorpated in, what seems to be ALL heli's regardless of size.

Regarding the videos, I do not (YET) own a Camcorder or suchlike. Maybe later eh? :indecisiveness:

Not too hot on finding things here yet so i'm going to try to find some pics of members models to see what everone here is upto - :apologetic: Any tips would be appreciated.

Regards to you all and Good Flying as and when your weather permits....

:wavey:

Super Mod & DEAL KING!
well atleast you will get a brand new fleet now. !! :)

now tell me this, you were into CP (collective pitch) then too right? mechanical mixing? ... now, I know that there werent any pitch curves, and throttle curves like computerized radios... so did you guys do any inverted flight? I have seen some videos on youtube, on people flipping a switch, and the controls will become inverted. but I am still not sure.. anywaz.. Its awesome that you are here! grab one of those keychain 808 #11 cameras.... cheap and will make a good enough video for your helis... :) mount it on a cap, and you have an OK setup..

I understand the thrill of the engine starting... man its amazing! :)

Welcome dude,
I like you started my RC addiction 20 odd years ago with a Precedent HiBoy trainer plane with OS40 engine. My dad, grandfather and i built it over one christmas. Got to fly it a few times up in Scotland, but my father left the Navy and we moved to a location where there was noone to help me learn :( I did see someone in those few shorts flights at the club in Scotland flying a heli and i was hooked. But it took another 25 years before i finally got back into it and now i'm a fully fledged addict.
Enjoy the ride my friend :D

Okay Guys thanks for your comments - and here we go!

Gaba - CP = The complete Heli Fleet (As Above) were ALL CP except the Tiny GMP Cricket (FP). CP gave you much more control and, in my opinoin, CP helis were easier to fly back then though some may not agree.

For me and everyone else into helis back then, the key was Set Up, Set Up and Set Up! C of G so very vital - lead fishing weights in the Nose was my secret, Glow engines running glass smooth throughout the full throttle range, Clean Fuel filters and clean fuel, perfectly balanced blades for Head and Tail - not too easy with wooden Blade units needing a self-fit white heat shrink cover - horrible stuff and an art of apllication itself - and loads of time spent setting up ALL servo/head/tail links so everything was Spot on together with a Motorised Gyro = they were So big compared to the tiny modern day units - I always used the reliable Futaba and Jr units A long long process but worthwhile. Blade balancing was eliminated on One Hirobo 505 and the Kalt Baron 60 when I bought 2 sets of Sitar Head and Tail blades - BUT they did cost 300 GBP a set so no tricky dodgy stuff - it was hell of a lot of dough back in those days with One wooden blade set costing 20 GBP a got - Still not cheap. Fuel was 5GBP for 4 litres.. Carbon Fibre stuff...haha in your dreams not available at all back then! Amazing to think that I've ordered 6 Sets of Align 450 glass fibre blades from Hk cost13 GBP including the post the other day, isn't it?

Regarding Inverted Flight. your right there, people - Very few used a Swith. The Pros (Johnny Wallington - Kalt UK) Flipped a swith on his TX that would reverse eveything on the TX .
Reverse Switch and me.... NO WAY....Scared the pants off me to be honest so I err... "chickened out" and stayed away from Inverted Low Hover/Flight and used the old favourite ..you know.....Height -- Just in Case... LOL = There's lots of OPEN Sky up there too - KWIM = Know What I Mean.

I'll look into that Camera idea soon and hit Google UK as I know I won't find it here in Romania ! Or ....Do you have any good Web links in the US who can do a good deal = Fair Price including overseas postage?

Hi Lee, It's good to know I'm not the only 'Old Timer' here so thanks for your welcome Dude!. 25 Years- A long break just like me. I'd be real interested to know what enticed you back into this Addictive hobby? I must have a look on your profile to see what heli's and radio gear your flying.

Regards all HeliNuts - Late eher now and I'm being beckoned by 'Her Indoors'!

I am El Taco!
Welcome to the site Andy. And if I may say, your English seems perfect! Did you study abroad? Or is English required in Romania? Just very curious as it seems as good or better than most people I talk to here in the States (and this includes Tony :chuckles:) ... Very good. Hope you get back in the air soon! 50% VAT (Luxury Tax)? Wow, that is expensive.

Hi Paulster 2 - Thanks for your Kind Remarks ..However - This has had me in absolute stitches -

So to clarify this once and for all to everyone here at RC_Help.com:

I am A True Honest Englishman, Out in the Morning Sun who now has Permanant Residence In ROMANIA!

And so explains my English Language abilities. Just wish I could say the Same for the Local Limbo here but I can't

Ref the 'Luxury Tax' total Rip-off if you ask me so Everything is Purchased via UK.
The Added benefit here is that as both Romania AND the UK are in the EU (Eoropean Union) NO IMport Taxes need to be paid on PRivate Packages .

Where ther's a Will - There's a way = Problem Solved.
Dam shame I can't do this for the Nitro Fuel but Rules Are Rules and so I mus,t By Law abide by them...until I find an alternative solution!!
(Hmmm.... I wonder If I could bring a load back by Long distance Road bus or train....lol)

Soh, Ash U Cann cee mi Frwirendz. my Ingrish iz rely Bad and I rely ned 2 Apoligeez to yoo orl.

All the same guys thanks for your kind remarks and witty humour...regards...Andy
