Water/moisture, wrong power source, cross polarity from the battery, short in the power system, to much load on the esc. That's just a small list.
What happened, how did it happen, what is your set up? Please give as much information as you can; so we can give you the most accurate responses.
Brand and model esc?
Battery brand and stats?
Motor brand and stats?
If your esc let out the magic smoke it could have been the bec that fried, without details we won't know for sure.
