I'm sure you all know, I have had my own personal server for a very long time. I run everything from a NAS to a testing server for this site out of my house as well as everything in between. Well, I have went through two different ones and I have outgrown all of them. Okay, two REAL servers. First was an old Dell 2850 that I out grew when it was locked to only 32 bit. The second one is an HP desktop style and it is one generation too old to do what I need it to do with a new router that I want to build. So that leads me up to my third server.
I have not purchased this yet because of a few reasons. The first reason was, I could not remember what the issue was with the PERC6 raid card. Thanks to callsign4223, I remembered (he reminded me lol) it was a drive limit size of 2TB. I have 8TB drives that I will be using in this server. So that raid card will not work. Instead, I will need an H700 raid card which is about $50 after you buy a new battery for it. Yes, a battery is required.
The next issue is flat finding one that is not out of this world expensive. I found one, but it's so close to the budget that I will not be able to actually purchase the new raid card. So yea, that's where I'm at now.
I know some of you are asking, "what in the world are you going to use a server like this for?". And just so you know, I'm looking at the Dell R710, 48GB of ram, dual Xeon 5660's for 12 core 24 thread performance. It has a 4 port NIC built into it and I will be adding another 4 port NIC into it.
The things I will be using this server for mainly are as follows.
File Server. I have to have a place to store files and be able to access them from anywhere in the world. True, I hardly ever leave my house, but when I do, and I need something, it's nice to know it's there.
Plex Media Server. I love my shows at night. So I need a plex server. I already have one running now as well as the file server above. This setup will just make it a little (lot) better lol.
Router. Yup, I'm going to be building my own router. It will be done with pfSense and it will be inside a VM in unraid. I want this for a more secure connection and lower latency than what I have now. Will I get it? More secure, yes. Lower latency, we will find out.
Backup Server. RCH needs a new backup server because I'm tired of paying for one. So I'm going to set it up on my own server. I just wish a static IP didn't cost so damn much through my ISP. Would definitely make setting up this backup server much easier.
Running copy of this site. I will have a VM setup that is an exact copy of this forum. At any given time, I can do whatever I want to this site on my own machine and know what it is going to do on the live site. This should come in handy for testing different issues that I have been having.
I know there is more that I will be doing with it such as ZoneMinder (maybe), but that is in the future and will not be setup when I get it. Programs like that are just way too hungry and I really don't want to have this thing under a constant load 24/7.
So that is what I'm up to right now with a server project. Unfortunately, I just can't fit everything into the budget that I have so it will take longer to complete.
