So on a network, you are going to have quite a few different devices that are hard wires into the system. A standard router that you purchase at the store will only have about a 4 port switch on the back (4 ports to plug stuff into plus the WAN port (internet port, or Wide Area Network port). A switch like I have is what you would find in a server farm to route from the router to more than 4 devices. In my case, I have a 48 port POE switch.
