Weird diagnosis on '08 ram 1500

Took my truck to the transmission specialist the other day. My reason is, after replacing the water pump and fan clutch a while back, the truck all of a sudden has no pulling power. It sounded so much different. I didn't drive it for about a week afterwards thinking that there was imminent doom for the truck. I decided to get back into it and give it another go. Same thing. So I thought that the transmission was just going to have to go out. I needed to use it. Not long after, I was driving through town and got frustrated so I punched it. The rpm gauge revved up and then it got quiet, sounded like it did before. It was pulling great. Thereafter, it was shifting great and that loud fan sound was gone for a bit. After sitting at a traffic light for a few seconds the issue returned. All this time I really had no shifting problems. I would get onto the highway and ease into the throttle. I listened to the shifting and it did well.

So, at the transmission joint, Tranny Sal hooked his high dollar truck tester up and let it do its thing. He said he saw nothing unusual. So me and Tranny Sal jumped in the bonafide dodge pickup and headed around the block. First thing he said was, "man that fan sure is loud." He drove it like he stole it only I was in it with him, so I guess he really hijacked me and the bonafide ram. Me and 'ol Sal got back to the transmission joint and he told his buddy Tranny Pete that there ain't nothin' wrong with it. The aftermarket fan clutch is making it sound like something is wrong. He continued to tell me that those aftermarket fan clutches in that vehicle are known to be like that. And it can actually hurt fuel economy. Said to go get an OEM clutch and be done with it. I left with my hand on my head in a scratching motion, eyebrows crinkled.

I got out on the highway this morning and thought that if the transmission is actually slipping, then when it grabs hold, the rpm gauge will drop. I gave it the gas and it hit 3k. All of a sudden the power was there and the noise went away, rpm never decreased.

'Ol Sal and his buddy Pete said the transmission in this particular truck is the same one they put in the Jeep Liberty. 42RLE. It's a small transmission as I have a 3.7L V6.

Anyone else heard of this happening?

He is right, those fan clutches are hit and miss on aftermarket brands. OEM is the way to go. The aftermarket are either very loose and you get over heating issues when in town, or they are too tight and you get what you have, a horse power robbing deafening sound coming from the high pitch fan (high pitch describing the angle of the blades, not the db level of the blades lol).
