Trex 550L Dominator

Some photos showing the build of my Trex 550L. Not complete but very close to complete. Still need to attach EC5 plugs to the battery ESC leads and finish setting up the head and tail servos. This was an easy build which I began just 4 days ago. Most of the build was done in 1 day with the rest being finished the next day which included the ESC, iKon and T1000 telemetry plus cleaning up the wires on the 2nd day. I love the added holes in the frame to route the wires into the inside of the heli and extra holes to allow zip ties to secure the wires as they travel from the servos to the iKon mounted on the front.

The 550 is a 600 helicopter (same head and tail) with a little shorter boom and blades. So it's quite a bit bigger than the 500.

And to make it even cooler, I see that you have an Ikon and Bluetooth module on there. You're gonna love the way the 550 flies. I'll never go back to a small heli again.

The 500 is not a 500 based on todays shift in determining the size of a heli. Back in the day if I am not mistaken the size was based on the motor can size and today its blade length. Align started that convention and it stuck for many years but today its almost misleading. I feel using the blade length for class size is more representative of it actual size.

Since the bigger birds used blade sizes that were more representative of their size their convention did not change much. If I am off base on any of this let me know or up date the mis information.

I agree you will love the way the 550 flies, I have one and it flies very stable and smooth...till i got to brave and crashed it... will have it back up and flying this weekend....

Re: Trex 550L Dominator with Talon 120 Esc



In February I bought the kit for Align 550L Dominator. It has been a very long slow enjoyable build.
To fly it I upgraded from DX6i to a Spektrum DX7 DSMX Transmitter which came with Spektum AR8000 receiver.
In the meantime have been enjoying the DX7 transmitter and using it on my other helis and with AccuRC simulator.http://www.rc-help.com/images/smilies/cool-new.png

The Align kit came with BeastX Gyro. I read some bad press on the Talon 90 that comes with the kit so I replaced with Talon 120 as shown in the picture. No impact on CG.
I have receiver and giro programmed and today was the day to connect the motor to the ESC.
When I applied throttle big surprise the motor spins in reverse? Quickly unplugged no damage done but wtf?http://www.rc-help.com/images/smilies/banana.gif
The motor leads are color coded red blue and black. The Talon 90 has the plug in locations color coded red blue and black.
There are no color codes on the Talon 120 plug in locations??? My guess is that I switch the black and red leads and it will spin the right direction.
Does anyone know for sure if this will reverse the direction the motor spins?http://www.rc-help.com/images/smilies/help.gif

On brushless motors, you can switch any two wires to reverse the motor direction. So worries though, if it spins in reverse, you won't hurt anything.

Yep, the colour coding means nothing on a brushless motor, in fact most ESC's and motors have all the leads the same colour. Getting the motor to spin the way you want is pure hit or miss, it's a 50/50 chance. If it turns the wrong way simply swap ANY two leads like Tony said. The motor itself is perfectly happy running in either direction, it does no harm to the motor whichever way it turns but only one way will actually drive the blades.
