Any water or oil based paint will be safe. Avoid anything with Lacquer thinner in it. And test a piece of the foam if using oil based thinned with Mineral Spirits.
And I would use an airbrush. They give the best results. But you can also use an aerosol can or a brush as well, it just doesn't look at good IMO. And be careful how much you put down, it does add a pretty good amount of weight.

thanks, Tony. I was kinda wondering about the lacquer thing. Good point about the weight factor too. I'm mainly just thinking of some highlights.
