Actually I find it as one of those "about time" deals. I am not surprised at this move. Lots of rumors have been coming out about the military moving to linux. It's about cost and security.

actually they pay for it. more than likely they are using an enterprise version which comes with tech support and licensing. In the end they get the power of Linux and the freedom to customize as they wish. They real attraction to it is the fact that they can customize it to the liking. windows needs the desktop where as Linux does not, the desktop is an "add on". At the command line level [which widows does not have] Linux uses less resources and is more flexible to hardware.
