My hanger fleet...

Well... I've been reprocessing all of my pics that I have up on my website ( and a few new ones ) and that includes my own airplanes. I probably have posted most of these sometime in the past, but they were at a lower resolution and certainly didn't look as good since my picture processing software has had a major upgrade and I've may have learned a thing or two.

Ok... just a heads up... I'm a 3D Hobby Shop's fanboy... as you will soon see. If the order I'm seeing is correct on the upload...

The first two are the 41" 3D Hobby Shop Edge 540. An awesome smaller airframe that is just a toss in the back and go to the field flyer. It has music wire landing gear that can really take a beating. It has had only one incident, but not when it was flying, a new flyer at our club, flew into it while it sat on the bench at the field. I did a quick repair to the minor damage that was just behind the canopy and it was just fine.

The next two pics are of the Sig Kobra. A true hanger queen if there ever was one. This is the 2nd airplane I have ever built and was never flown. I didn't fly it because I was in my early teens and just couldn't afford the rest of the parts it needed. I suspect the balsa is brittle by now and I know the Monokote is because I've accidently puntured it in one place on the wing. I'd rather keep it for the memories it brings than risking it in the air or taking the time to recover it.

Next is the 47" 3D Hobby Shop Extra 300 SHP. This is the first plane I ever got from 3D Hobby Shop and it's a shame it's no longer available for purchase. This specific one actually crashed after this very photo shoot. The rear horizontal stab had a defect in the balsa and the right side sheared off while in flight. While I did get it back down will a bit of damage, 3D Hobby Shop completely replaced the whole fuse. It's a great 3D beginner's plane that I'd recommend to anyone as is a joy to fly, in fact, this also makes an awesome sport plane as well. I do still have the second one. 3D Hobby Shop and Extreme Flight has since joined together and still produce a lot of great airplanes.

Next up is the 51" 3D Hobby Shop AJ Slick. Another great flyer and a tough bird to boot. I think I've re-geared it at least once having come in too hot. I suspect I need to replace the elevator servo but was unable to actually prove it... I just know it didn't flare on that landing and I almost rekitted it.

I don't recall the wingspan on the yellow one... I think it's around the 46-48" range. It's the 3D Hobby Shop Viper. An awesome pattern / 3D hybrid that was one ( yeah, they all were a favorite, I hate picking just one ) ... favorite accurate flyer if there ever was one. I did fully rekit this one, one or the other aileron servo locked up on take off and it spun like a top. Had I recognised the problem before it found the ground, there is a slim possiblity I could have countered with the oposite servo... but alas, I didn't have the experience for that and it'd have been close anyway, it happened very quickly. They had already discontinued this model by that time, or I would have also ended up with one of the red versions that was also very cool looking.

The last one here.. is a World Models P-51B ... a not quite scale version that was the second airplane I got right after getting back into the hobby when I had a real job. I'd taken the motor out of a FMS foamy P-51B that I actually learned to fly on. The FMS was the reason to this day I cuss all foamy airplanes as being as inaccurate to fly as you can get, they twitch and wiggle like nobodies business. The World Models version was very stable in comparison but the motor was a tad ( read a whole lot ) too large for it, so it was nose heavy and while I did get the CG balanced, it flew heavy. On the otherhand, it by no means flew at scale speeds either... it could really move if I put the coals to it. While coming in from the north to land on a relatively calm day, a breeze hit it from the east pushing slightly into a roll... I dumb thumbed it like it's no business... and thumbed it more in the wrong direction... finally meeting the slight hill that I was coming over just before it would have made it to the landing strip...

I do have a couple of flat foamies also... never felt like taking their pics... they are ok but they are foamies and won't make it to any of my favorite lists ... or even close. So no pics on those....

3D airplanes make some of the best sport flier's in my opinion IF they are well designed. Other than not having any dihedryl to help with stability, they are made to fly stabley well below speeds other airplanes just want to fall out of the sky at. Cheaply designed airplanes can be fun, but a well designed airplane makes worlds of difference in the flight stability... foamies are fun to toss around but lack the stability of balsa ( IMO ).
