It also helps if the motors are spinning different dirrections so that your plane doesnt torque roll with throttle

You'll have no problem using rubber bands from walmart! I do it all the time!

They will only work if they are the same brand. Spektrum TX with Spektrum RX. Etc

The solid orange light is what you want when your flying.

I have a DX8 and I'm super happy with it!! I recommend you put down the money to at least get a DX6i. It may not have the programming options like the 9x but signal quality is higher and stronger. Also, there is no shortage of finding recievers for Spektrum! Lastly, if you do break the Spekrum...
