Hello From Newbie Heli Pilot

Hi Members,
This is Rajat from India, a bit of my intro here. I am an engineer by profession.
I am a new Heli enthusiast who fancied rc planes / heli's in college days but could not get through one. Once into job it never crossed my mind until recently I happened to bump into it somehow and was bitten by the rc bug again. Got hold of a Thunder Tiger Raptor 30 V2 (used one) and a Turnigy TGY-i10 Tx/Rx set and started my journey into the wonderful world of RC flying. As I researched through net (forums and youtube) I realised Heli is a complicated machinery (as compared to planes) and needs a lot of studying to understand how it works (luckily my engg. blend of mind helps me understand these well !!) + lot of sim practice + practice on fixed pitch heli's before moving to collective pitch heli's (preferably micro heli's are good for practice as they are crash resistant to larger extent) + later on move to collective pitch heli's (micro) and then bigger beauties.

I am still reading and watching youtube video's while waiting for WLToys V911 and V988 to arrive for practice meantime I enjoy practicing hovering with my son on a coaxial heli at the moment. Lucky enough (I think so) I found a Turnigy FBL100 on ebay (which is collective pitch micro heli) and bought it also for my level3 practice, yet to be delivered and eager to see the beauty in hands.

And while searching I happened to find rc-help.com to be a good forum and source for my learning and sharing experiences.

One more micro heli, ESKY 150 V2 is on my mind which is recommended by a fellow veteran from local flying club for practice.

Still need to understand pitch alignments and other things that go into setting up a collective pitch heli like Thunder Tiger Raptor which I have. And of course I will seek guidance from local flying veterans for setting it up and my hands on learning.

I seek advise from fellow members :
1. Is my planning alright or suggest me improvements on path forward.
2. Suggest me good simulator for heli practice (a) one free download (b) one to buy preferably with source
3. I strongly wish to have a petrol heli (for ease of fuel and maintenance), please suggest where to find one. As far as I have researched I found Vario Benzin to be a nice one but is discontinued now.
4. Any other suggestion.

That's all about me.
And finally I believe, study more on heli's + practice and practice can help me to fly my Thunder Tiger Raptor one day.

Suggestions and comments most welcome.

Best regards,
Rajat

Hi Rajat, welcome to the forum. I see you have your learning experience all mapped out in a logical progression if you don't mind a suggestion, skip the small CP helicopters when you feel you are ready to progress from fix pitch go straight to 450 size they are easier to fly than mini CP, I found the 250 ~ 300 size CP set my learning back, the moment I went to 450 size I improved. I came back to a Blade 180 CFX much later, I could not have flown that as a beginner.

As for SIMs there is not really much that is free except maybe the Clearview unlicensed which gives you a couple of Planes & a couple of helicopters. Commercial SIM s, Clearview, Heli-X7 or AccuRC2, there is also RealFlight but they charge for every upgrade & Phoenix but their product is no longer supported but you may get a 2nd hand copy cheap as people are getting rid of it.

As for Gasser RC Helicopters I'll let somebody else take that on, I only fly electric because that's all that's allowed where I fly.

Yea, Phoenix is no longer supported in any way. They shut down all of their servers so there is no way to get online or even update the sim now.

Welcome to the forum!

Thank you Admiral, advise noted very well.

Welcome Rajat, look of great people on here to help out. As for sims, I've been using Realflight for a long time. I've started experimenting with NeXt as well. They both have their pros and cons. Go with what you can afford.

Cheers,
Dino

Can you list the pro's and con's of each? Maybe a thread in the Paid Sim Section? I think that would help out a lot of people on here.
