Motors Motor Hot

Hey all, I finally got my hobbywing 50aV3 installed in my Gaui X3. I'm getting 5 mins. flight time and the battery is at 14% when done flying. The thing is that my motor seems hot when I'm done flying. I have 6s 1800Kv motor with 11T pinion on it and I'm not sure if my settings are right on the ESC and maybe that's why the motor could be running hot. My setting for the ESC goes like this:
1) Brake/off
2) Battery type/Lipo
3) Cutoff mode/soft
4) Low voltage threshold/Middle
5) Flight mode/Heli Gov. off "Default setting is (ELF)" What Is ELF?
6) Auto rotation restart 10s
7) Timing degree/8 degree
8) PWM frequency/8 KHz
9) BEC output/5.2
10) Lipo cells/Auto calculate

Everything is default except for the following: Flight mode/ Default is Gov. ELF
Timing/ Defaut is 15 degree, I have 5 but rounded up to 8
PWM/ Default is 32 KHz, I have 8 KHz
The timing and PWM I got that information off the motor detail chart. I've heard that some motors run Hot like the Scorpion motors "Which is the next motor I'm going to get soon" How hot should the motor be when done flying. I've heard that you should be able to put your finger on the motor for about 10s, I'm lucky to put my finger on the motor for about 5s. Is this all OK or do i need to worry. The ESC and Battery get warm but the motor is a different story. I also heard that the Hobbywing 50a V3 only works with certain motors. Is this true? The gaui fly's great but just concern about the motor. Any information is helpful and I appreciate it.

Have you checked pinion mesh? If thats tight it'll run hot. holtneil was telling me that sometimes those motors will run hot below 80% I think what he said..if your running gov mode you'll just use pitch to fly it then from what I understand, i have the same issue with my 500 FB heli, esc is not hot but that motor is a smoking after just a little hover on it..not really smoking but you know what I mean....HOT! LOL It has an Align esc in it but I want to try gov as soon as I get me a Castle to run in it...

The pinion mesh is fine. I don't use gov. mode and my mode is off. I've been using cheap motors. I figure since I spent money on a new electronics, I should invest in a good motor also. My new electronics are: TX "DX6"/ FBL unit "AR7300BX"/ ESC "Hobbywing 50a V3" and next week I'm going to purchase the XNova XTS 2618-1580Kv instead of the scorpion motor. The XNova has more power and a cool running motor vs Scorpion motor. Hopefully that will help me out. I wasn't sure if my settings on the ESC weren't right.

Here is the tricky question. How hot is hot? Can you put your finger on the motor and not get burned within a few seconds?

Hey Tony. Yeah, If I'm lucky, I might last a few seconds like no more then 5s. Even If I turn my flight time down, still no good.

If you are just hovering, there is very little air flow going over the motor and it will get hotter than normal. If you think it's too hot though, turn your timing down just a hair more and/or put a slightly smaller pinion on the motor. These two things will cool the motor down a bit.

I did some hovering but mostly flying. I went through 3 batteries so far and the same result. I also drop my motor pinion from 13T down to 11T. I really didn't want to go any lower on the pinion. Now I didn't try lower the timing but I will give that a shot. The timing is at 15 degrees and my next lower number is 12 degree. I'm thinking about buying a new motor. I know that Scorpion puts out a motor for the Gaui X3 but I heard they run hot also. My choice of motor is the XNova 2618-1580Kv and that motor runs cool, so they say. Do you or any one else know anything about this motor? I'm going outside in a few to try the timing out and I'll report back. Thanks Tony.

Sorry about that, my timing is at 8 degrees " which the specs recommend" and my next lowest is 4 degrees.

Give 4º a try and see how it goes. Not only with the heat, but also the power of the motor. Lowing the timing will also lower the power.

I agree with the pinion, 11 is about as low as I would want to go as well.

I think it's been mentioned before, but make sure everything is spinning free and there is no binding.

And I don't know anything about that motor. Have looked at the Gaui x3, but figure I have enough 450 size heli's lol.

I'm back from burning up two batteries and yes it brought the temp down but like you said, the power decrease. How about if i leave the timing at 4 degree and switch pinion from 11T to 12T. Would that help some also? or will that set up increase my temp?

That would put more load on the motor, and with the lower timing, would feel worse than it does now. As long as you are not turning the windings brown in the motor, or not smelling a burnt smell, I wouldn't worry about the old temp. I remember running motors when I was racing and them getting hot as hell. But this was racing where I didn't care if I went through 4 motors a night as long as I won. As long as you can hold your fingers on teh motor for two seconds before having to remove them, you should be safe. And I stress "should". But use your eyes and nose to verify you are not actually burning it up. This is what I woudl do anyway if you need the extra power of the higher timing.

I'd also suggest throwing a cheapy infrared thermometer into your next order from HK or somewhere... HK's are around $10 more or less and even if they aren't accurate you'll have a good approx temp than just your finger method

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I'm going to leave it at 4 degrees and 11T and burn up a few more batteries to see what happens. I'll keep my nose and eyes on alert. I have to sneek outside when it's not raining. The weather here is wet. We are going into our 3rd week of rain and where I live is saturated but Tampabay FLA "2hrs south from me is under water" So rain is an issue when it comes to flying or in my behalf, getting this bird right. Thanks for the help and have a good day! :)

Yeah rdsok, I will do that on my next order that i place. I just never had to use one before but It's nice to have when you need it.

Hi mate second what Tony said , how hard is the pitch range you can reduce this till your new motor comes , also watch the rpm if low this can make the motor hot as well , most motors run well at 80 to 85% throttle

Hey holtneil. My pitch is at 12 degrees and I have my throttle curves are at stunt1 is straight 85 and stunt 2 is straight 90.

I'm not so sure about that. If he had the timing set close to what the motor calls for, them maybe that is what the motor runs (temp wise). I know scorpion runs quite hot. I have one that was donated to me which I have not had a chance to fly yet on the SE V2, but I suspect it will run hot as well. It may just be the motor, but wanted to rule out everything else first. And if he can handle the lower timing with lower power, not only will it run cooler, but it will last longer as well. Same goes with any motor. Lower the timing and it should last longer.

I got a break in the weather so out I went again to try the new settings. 12 degree at pitch, stunt1 @85 and stunt 2 @90. This time I was a little more aggressive and it went great. Still the motor's hot. Like you guys say, some motors run hot. Now my flight time increased to 6 mins instead of 5 mins. :) I'm still getting a new motor. That's why I'm going with the XNova instead of the Scorpion motor. This motor suppose to run cooler and more power then the Scorpion. A little bit more money "Scorpion is $79.99 and XNova is 92.99" The only thing I haven't heard any feed back on this motor. If anyone has this brand of motor please let me know how you like it.

Yes I can. I'm getting the motor from Anything heli and the model # is: XNova XTS 2618-1580Kv 10p. Not sure what 10p is but I'm guessing 10 poles. Check it out and compare it to the scorpion HK 2520-1880Kv. I haven't place the order yet but I will soon. Probably next week. Give me your Expert opinion on the two or recommend another choice if you like. Thanks for your help! :)

I take it you are running a 6s setup on this bird? I was thinking you were running a 3S setup.
