Screwdrivers for Asian Cross Point Screws.

As there are an increasing Chinese made products coming on the market, the screws used in assembling these devices are likely to be what was known as JIS or Japanese Industrial Standard.

Whilst this standard no longer officially applies to the screws and screwdrivers used, it still exists.

Phillips crosspoint screwdrivers are incompatible with JIS cross head screws.

If you have stripped out screws or damaged the Phillips pattern screwdrivers, this is the reason.

A JIS screw can be identified by a small dimple on the head of the screw in one of the corners of the cross.

Here are Vessel JIS screwdrivers:

JIS used to do hydraulic fittings, so when you got a JIS JIC fitting you had problems, predominantly on Komatsu vehicles:)

I only found out a couple of weeks ago whilst going off on an Internet Trek as I like to call my information expeditions.

All the time I have been servicing Japanese electronic devices and all the time wondering if "this screw" was going to be the one that has frozen in it's thread and will strip out. There is usually a formula for this. It is n-1, n being the number of screws to be removed and the one screw that has stripped out and is now stuck in the thread.

I asked about these screwdrivers in a local specialist tool supplier and he hadn't even heard of them.

Now that I do, I will be ordering a set of the cross point drivers.

I have been in the automotive trade for over 40 years and this is new to me.
I have seen the screws with the dot on the head and now I know what it means. :)
I work mainly on Japanese and European cars but with the increasing number of Chinese vehicles on the roads this may be something to keep and eye on.
Thanks for the info. :)
