I've been wondering for a while and thought I should finally ask and put my mind at ease. What is this and what does the number mean?

Rep, back in the day, was used so that you know what members contribute positively to a forum and help people out. However, almost no one uses it now and I have not pushed the issue. But if anyone wants to get into sending rep, you can do so by clicking the little star icon below a users sig.
