After seeing all the very cool PS Units in this forum and reading all the threads. The amazing amount of knowledge and information that was available to all of us here that love flying made me want to build something that (well I feel at least) was very cool. Thanks to the Educators!!! Hope you all dig it! 2014-03-14 06.06.00.jpg2014-03-14 07.58.57.jpg2014-03-14 12.29.33.jpg2014-03-15 10.10.34.jpg2014-03-15 10.10.40.jpg2014-03-15 10.10.50.jpg2014-03-15 10.11.04.jpg2014-03-15 10.11.09.jpg2014-03-29 09.18.42.jpg2014-03-29 14.10.26.jpg2014-03-30 16.16.47.jpg2014-03-30 16.16.50.jpg2014-04-05 08.56.18.jpg2014-04-05 08.56.32.jpg2014-04-05 08.56.44.jpg2014-04-05 18.13.04.jpg2014-04-05 18.13.09.jpg2014-04-05 18.13.19.jpg2014-04-05 23.04.12.jpg2014-04-06 09.49.47.jpg2014-04-06 09.49.51.jpg2014-04-06 09.50.00.jpg2014-04-06 13.40.22.jpg2014-04-06 13.40.47.jpg2014-04-06 14.02.22.jpg2014-04-06 14.02.43.jpg2014-04-06 14.02.50.jpg2014-04-06 14.03.07.jpg2014-04-06 14.03.31.jpg2014-04-06 14.04.43.jpg2014-04-06 14.04.49.jpg2014-04-06 14.04.56.jpg

OK, So I was with you until you got into the "Grunge " paint thing, is that what makes it "Steam Punk"
Nice looking PS with a tore up paint job though

Hehe. Yeah, that'd be what makes it steam punk.

Pretty cool job. Also, not my personal style preference, but definitely well done and you pulled off the look well.

Make sure those screw terminals are rated for the current/power you intend to be putting through them. A lot of times that kind of stuff is geared toward low power 12V applications and will not hold up to the 24V 40+ amps that that rig can put out at full tilt.

Nice job dude. Looks awesome.
I think if i did mine in that style, I'd be thrown in jail every time i tried to go through customs at airports :D
It does look very sinister :)

Well, ordered my icharger 4010,soon as it gets here and I hook R' up I will let ya know. I hooked up my Passport to the 12v and it worked like a champ.

I was pretty diligent on checking the ratings on everything so I "should" be good haha, just gotta wait on the 4010 to get here and find out. Anddddd if all else fails I am going to mount the mini fire extinguisher i bought tonight hahaha

Word of warning, when you switch the unit on, make sure the output switches are off before you plug into the wall, the duo series chargers are susceptible to overvoltage when the psu are powered on direct into the charger and cause magic smoke to appear,

so

plug psu into wall

charger into psu

then turn on output of psu

Coolice PSU's have a little circuit that helps protect the duo series chargers from this behaviour.

Excellent work. Not everything needs to be a boring aluminium box.

I see what you have achieved with a tarnished copper effect, hence the "Steam Punk" industrial look.

The more it is used and the outside beaten up and worn, the more authentic will look.

Being aluminium, how did you get the paint to stick? Did you undercoat first with an etching paint?

It looks very heavy, especially since it has the timber chassis for the power supplies. How much does it weigh?

Very good. :)

You could try fitting a time delay circuit in line to the O/P terminals. That way, if by accident, you leave the charger plugged in, it won't receive power whilst the power supply is turning on.

Just something to consider. We are playing around with high power outputs here, so anything to protect your gear is a good thing.

Sorry for the delay getting back to ya and thanks for the kind words. The box is from Harbor Freight so its not aluminum more poly paper and wood so the paint wasnt an issue. Weight wise .... Its a BEAST ....easy 40 pounds. I wanted to see if i could pull off a cool power supply box at low cost. I feel it was a success , all in all probably less than $100.00 spent.

Great call I am going to do just that,

I like the orange LED displays behind the fan grills too, they look like heated elements and look similar to the old valve Nixie tubes and all ties in with the Steam Punk theme:

http://www.meinbergglobal.com/english/news/the-world-s-first-ntp-synchronized-nixie-tube-clock.htm

Jeez, it weighs approximately 18 kg!!!!!

It may not seem much to carry until you have to for any great distance with your plane and transmitter as well. And the batteries.

Have you considered putting Steam Punk style wheels of suitable strength and a handle on it? You may need to with some flying fields.

All good for only $100.

Great job:) What I like about everyones builds is that they are all personal and different:)

You have done an excellent job :) and have added a great effect to your supply.

Reminds me of a comedy in the UK Red Dwarf:)

wheels are a fine idea ! and yes 2 transmitter cases and 2 large helicopters and a generator make for a work out at any field I go to ! I have been looking at old railroad trunks like with all the different compartments and cases that have wheels that I can put all the gear in except the Helis.

the NIXIE TUBE was exactly what I was trying to think of and just couldn't translate that thought to actually something that wouldn't be so fragile and still look the part! I could not for the life of me remember what they we called " Nixie Tube" I shall Thank You!

You got the effect just right, that was one of the features that stood out.

The colour of the LED's genuinely look like something that is glowing red hot, under a grill. Using actual Nixie tubes wouldn't have made it look any more authentic than it already is. It will generate it's own heat when charging anyway. :)

I've seen those railway cases, I know the ones you mean. If you do put wheels on, make sure they are big enough to roll over rough ground.
