my almost done project

I started a quick project. I thought I had all the parts. I did not, missing a diode and I want at least one more solar panel so I can boost the mah up. Right now I think it puts out around 130 mah.

Blah blah blah, here's the pics.

So what is it? A solar power battery charger. I can charge my phone now when I don't have Thomas Edison near by. I have 4 standard AA rechargeable batteries. These get fed from the solar panel. Then I have a usb cable that I will tie into the batteries.

The nice thing about this is the batteries will store the charge for those not so good days. Plus if I really need to I can home charge the batteries.

Thank you.

Its done for now. One day I might upgrade to lithium ion.

At 1415 I took a reading of 5.19 volts. I will check again at 1445 to see what's his it's doing. Now we are mostly overcast so who knows what will happen.

This version won't do anything Apple. To make it compatible with Apple you need to jump the brown/green and white wires to the positive with a resistor for each wire.

Every thing that was bought was purchased at radio shack:

Otter box on sale for 14.99
Diodes 5.00 for about 12 diodes
Solar panel 13.99 on sale (it should have a second in series so the mah will increase) 1w 6v 130 may

Everything else I had on hand and repurposed.

I need to get a better battery box, this has a bad springs. Again radio shack has them for about $3.00.

At 1530 I took a reading and the results were 5.91 volts at the batteries. When I plugged in my phone it went to full power charge instead of slow charge. Somewhere between 5.19 volts and 5.9 volts is where the charge cycle will drop to slow charge. I have the LG Optimus G pro which is my test phone.

So far the wife did a charge on the new setup and it looks like lithium ion is the way to go. Down side more cost due to the circuitry involved. I will say if you have an emergency then this will get the job done. Todays phones need more power than what I have in this kit. Maybe do an 8 pack of batteries 2 sets in parallel and 2 in series.

Thats why I have normal rechargeable batteries. No sun just charge them before you leave the house. I have the amazon brand and they are rated at 2000 mah. They wont last to long but will give you a quick recharge. In fact its super cloudy today so I will have to home charge it.
