General Beefing Up The New 'eggshell' Trex Canopies

Anyone who owns a Trex 700X or 760X and probably any of the new 'X' series Trex' must have noticed that Align went a bit too far with weight saving when it came to the canopy. The canopy is super light and looks great but is very fragile. It's so flexible it chips and cracks way too easily. I found that the worst places are around the mounting points and the 'chin' of the canopy as these areas are stressed during installation and removal.

Here's how I beefed mine up so that you have at least half a chance of getting the canopy on and off without cracking it.
So you need a canopy:

Some 100g per sq metre carbon cloth (off eBay):

Some thin CA clue and some wide clear packing tape (some CA de-bonder is a good idea too):

Cover the cloth with the tape overlapping each strip slightly. Cover an area big enough to make all your patches (the tape stops the weave from falling apart when you cut it).

Mark and cut out patches:

Seal off the grommet holes on the outside with tape to stop the CA running through. Mark the inside of the canopy with a few dots to show where the edges of the patch will be. Apply CA glue to the inside of canopy and press the patch on. Be really careful to not let the CA run or get CA fingerprints on the canopy.
It's a good idea to have some CA de-bonder handy just in case as it's almost inevitable some CA will get on the paint finish::thumbup:

I extend the patch along the 'chin' to stop it cracking there:

The finished canopy is a lot stronger and the patches dont add any significant weight. You can leave the tape on or remove it, your choice.:

Nice, I had a 700X but sold it recently. I agree on going a bit far on weight saving. I had put a small crack by the canopy mount just putting the canopy on. Looks like a simple/smart upgrade... How you liking the 760?

Mine is the 700X too. The canopy is one of the optional colour schemes which does look quite like the 760X.

I'd like to try the 760X one of these days but i have too many big helis already!
