I'm looking at getting a 700 size heli and trying to pick the right ESC. I'm looking for opinions from some of the gang. In short, does it make sense to get a 160A esc with all the latest bells and whistles for $200+ more or will the 130A Hobbywing/Align esc be all that is really needed? Price is always a concern but I'm a firm believer in you get what what you pay for.

This is really doing to depend on what your motor is going to pull. If your motor is rated for 130A+, then definitely get the larger ESC. If your motor is rated for less than 130, then you can go with the cheaper unit.

Right now I'm looking at a kit from Align as one possibility. One comes with a 160A and 1 comes with 130A ESC. It looks like the standard motor is Align 850MX Dominator 490kV Brushless. It seems like one of the bigger motors out there.I'm just trying to figure out if another $200 is warranted. I'm wondering if there may have have been some feed back to Align with concerns over the 130A esc being at its limit.

That motor is rated at 115 amps with a 250 amp burst for 2 seconds. If you are just flying around and not flying any kind of smack 3D, I think you will be fine with the 130A.

The 130 A ESC is fine unless you fly extremely hard with very high headspeed. I use the 130a on three of my 700’s no issues at all. Even the Align team pilots seem to manage just fine with the 130a
